Two layers on a modest ranch can put several tons in a container. Three layers on a larger roof, which was common practice before overlay limits tightened, will put a 20 yard box at its ceiling well before the walls are full. Placing the Container for a Tear-Off
Where the box sits determines how fast the crew works. Every foot a shingle has to be carried is time and labor, so the target is the drip edge, directly under the slope being stripped, with the doors facing away from the wall so the container can still be entered on foot. Positioned well, a crew can shovel and drop straight into the box off a ladder-mounted chute.
Kingsport driveways make that harder than it sounds. Long, steep and narrow drives common on ridge lots often cannot be reversed down safely with a loaded truck, and some houses in the older planned neighborhoods sit close enough to the street that there is nowhere alongside to put a container at all. Things to consider:

What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?
Size it from squares and layers, not from the look of the roof. A single-layer tear-off up to about 25 squares generally fits a 15 yard container, and 25 to 35 squares suits a 20 yard. Add a layer and you move up a size or plan a swap. Architectural shingles weigh substantially more than three-tab, so tell us which you have when you book.
Why can I not just use a 30 yard for a big roof?
Because shingles are heavy enough that weight, not volume, sets the limit. A 30 yard container filled with tear-off debris would exceed what the truck can legally and safely haul long before the walls are full. Two smaller containers or one container with a swap is the correct approach, and it usually works out no more expensive than trying to force a single oversized load.
How close to the house can you put the container?
As close as the approach allows, and the drip edge under the slope being stripped is the target. That lets the crew drop straight into the box instead of carrying debris. The limits are overhead service drops, tree limbs, landscaping and septic components on the approach. On steep or narrow driveways we may need to place at the top of the drive and work down.
Can I put old decking and gutters in with the shingles?
Rotten decking, felt, flashing, drip edge and ridge vent all belong in the tear-off container. Aluminum and steel gutters are better set aside for scrap, since they have their own outlet and are worth keeping out of the load. What is worth avoiding is mixing general household debris in, because a clean roofing load can be handled differently from a mixed one.
Can you deliver the day before we start?
Yes, and for roofing we usually recommend it. A roof has to be dried in the same day it is opened, so crews start early and cannot wait on a delivery. We will place the container the afternoon before where scheduling allows. After a storm or ice event, demand across the Tri-Cities spikes at once, so book as soon as you have a start date.
