Roll-off is the industry term for the open-top container that arrives on the back of a truck and is rolled down onto the ground where you want it. It stays for the duration of the job, gets loaded from ground level through a rear door or over the side walls, and is winched back onto the truck when you are finished. The Five Sizes and What They Do
The number in front of the word yard refers to cubic yards of capacity. What that translates to in practice is easier to understand as pickup truck loads, because most people have a mental picture of a full truck bed.

Note that the 20, 30 and 40 yard containers are all 22 feet long. They differ in wall height, not footprint. That matters when access is the constraint: if a 20 yard fits your driveway, a 30 yard will too, and it gives you half again the volume for the same ground space. Why Weight Decides More Than Volume
Every container has a weight allowance as well as a capacity, and for a great many jobs the weight limit is reached first. This is the single thing that catches people out. A 30 yard box filled with cardboard and furniture will be nowhere near its tonnage. The same box filled with plaster, tile or shingles would be over the limit at half depth, and a truck cannot legally or safely haul it.
The practical consequence is that heavy material needs a smaller container, not a bigger one. Concrete, brick, block, soil, roofing and old plaster all belong in a 10 or 15 yard box. Light bulky material belongs in a 30 or 40. Getting this backwards is why a job occasionally ends with a container that cannot be picked up until some of it is removed. Access, Terrain, and Placement
A roll-off truck needs more room than people expect. Figure on roughly sixty feet of straight, firm approach and around ten feet of width, plus overhead clearance for the hoist to raise the container. Ridge-and-valley terrain around Kingsport means long, steep and narrow driveways are the norm rather than the exception, and gravel is common.
Red clay is the local variable. It holds water and softens, so a gravel drive that carries daily traffic can rut under a loaded roll-off after a wet spell. Some practical points:
- Clear the approach of vehicles, trailers, equipment and low limbs before delivery
- Identify septic tanks, field lines, cisterns and shallow utilities so weight stays off them
- Ask about boards under the rails if you are protecting new or sealed surfaces
- Decide which way the rear door should face before the truck arrives
- Call 811 for utility locates before any digging associated with the work

Loading a Roll-Off Properly
Most containers have a swing-out rear door, which turns loading from a lifting exercise into a walking one. Use it. Heavy and flat material goes in first and low, distributed along the length rather than piled at one end. Bulky items go on top. Breaking down furniture and boxes doubles what actually fits.
The one hard rule is that the load must stay level with the top rail. A container heaped above the walls cannot be tarped, and an untarped load cannot legally travel. If a box is overloaded on collection day, the driver has to leave it until material comes off, which costs everyone a day. Level it as you go and that never comes up.
Prohibited Material
Standard containers take general household waste, construction and demolition debris, furniture, yard debris, appliances without refrigerant, and most ordinary jobsite material. Tennessee law prohibits municipal solid waste facilities from accepting whole waste tires, lead-acid batteries and used oil, so those need their proper channels. Beyond that, the exclusions are hazardous or liquid: paints, solvents, fuels, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane cylinders, medical waste and asbestos-containing material.

Which size suits the job
Pick by weight first. Dense material such as concrete, tile, plaster or shingles belongs in a 10 or 15 yard container, since those loads reach their tonnage allowance while the box still looks empty. Light bulky debris suits a 30 or 40 yard. The 20, 30 and 40 share the same 22ft footprint, so extra height costs no extra ground space.

What does roll-off actually mean?
It describes how the container is delivered. The truck backs into position and the open-top steel box rolls down its rails onto the ground, then is winched back up when the job is done. That is different from a front-load bin, which is lifted and emptied in place on a route. Roll-offs stay on site for the length of a project and are loaded from ground level.
How much room does the delivery truck need?
Roughly sixty feet of straight, firm approach, about ten feet of width, and clear space overhead for the hoist to raise the container. Overhead clearance is the one people forget, and low limbs or service drops stop a delivery just as effectively as a blocked driveway. On tight sites we will walk the placement with you before anything comes off the truck.
Is a 30 yard always better value than a 20?
Only for light material. The 20, 30 and 40 yard containers all share the same 22 foot footprint and differ in wall height, so on light bulky debris the larger box gives more volume for the same ground space. On heavy debris it is the wrong choice entirely, because the weight allowance is reached long before the extra height is any use.
How full can I load the container?
Level with the top rail, no higher. Anything heaped above the walls cannot be tarped, and a load that cannot be tarped cannot legally travel. If a container is overfilled on collection day, the driver has to leave it until material is removed, which costs a day. Load heavy flat material low and along the length, and keep the top level as you go.
Can the container sit on the street instead of my driveway?
Sometimes, but street placement is a permission question for the local authority rather than something we can authorise. Requirements differ between the City of Kingsport and the surrounding counties, so check with the relevant office before assuming it is allowed.
