Learn moreColonial Heights, Tennessee · Sullivan County
Colonial Heights sits on the south side of Kingsport, between Fort Henry Drive and the ground that falls away toward Warriors' Path State Park. Most of it went up in the sixties and seventies as the city spread south, so you get wide streets, deep front lawns and carports instead of the tight lots you find closer to downtown. Annexation has taken bites out of the old census boundary over the years, which means one side of a street can be inside Kingsport and the other side unincorporated Sullivan County. For a roll-off that matters less than the driveways do: long, sloped, mostly asphalt, and shaded by trees that were saplings when the houses were new.

Housing runs from brick ranches along Moreland Drive and the Rock Springs Road side to split-levels and newer builds off Lebanon Road. A lot of them are walk-out basements cut into the slope, which is what gives Colonial Heights its half-buried garages and the sharp drop from garage floor to back yard. Driveways tend to be long and pitched: fine when dry, greasy after rain, and the red clay banks either side of them go soft fast. Overhead is the real constraint. Maples and pin oaks planted with the subdivisions are now big enough to scrape the top rail of a can going up the drive. We ask for a photo of the approach before we schedule, and where the pitch is bad we will set the can on boards at the flat spot near the street rather than fight the grade.
The steady work here is bathroom and kitchen gutting in seventies stock: cast-iron tub out, particleboard cabinets, one layer of sheet vinyl over another. Roof tear-offs are the other constant, usually one or two layers of asphalt off a hip roof with an attached garage. Basement and crawlspace cleanouts come in waves when a long-held house changes hands, and there is a steady run of deck rebuilds where pressure-treated framing from the eighties has finally gone spongy underfoot. Storm work shows up too. When one of those big maples lets go across a back yard, brush and split trunk fill a can faster than most people expect.

We head south out of town on Fort Henry Drive and cut west on Moreland Drive, which is about ten minutes outside of school-run traffic. Main routes in: Fort Henry Drive (TN-36), Moreland Drive, Interstate 81.

On your own driveway, no. It is private property and the can goes where you tell us to put it. A permit only enters into it if we have to set on the street or block a sidewalk, and because parts of Colonial Heights are inside Kingsport city limits and parts are unincorporated Sullivan County, you should confirm the street rules with whichever one your address actually falls under.
Steep is normal here and we work with it every week. The load rides on the wheels while the can rolls off, and we put boards under the rails on older asphalt to spread it out. If there is a sharp lip at the road or a crack you are worried about opening up, say so before delivery and we will change the angle of approach or set closer to the street.
Figure on roughly twenty-two feet of vertical room over the drop point, plus a clear lane in. Mature hardwood in Colonial Heights routinely hangs lower than that. Trimming two or three limbs beforehand usually solves it. If that is not practical, we will normally find a spot at the head of the driveway or along the curb where the canopy opens back up.
You can, but shingles are heavy and they change the maths. A square of asphalt tear-off runs a couple hundred pounds, so a full roof hits the weight allowance long before it fills a large can. For a whole tear-off we will usually put you in a smaller can sized for the tonnage and swap it out, which works out cheaper than paying an overweight charge.
